Never Fond of Saying Goodbye

JoAnne is talking on the phone behind her desk.

JoAnne: (on phone) Okay, we should be able to get to it later this afternoon. (listens) You're welcome. Bye. (hangs up the phone)

Dan swings his body around the door frame and goes into JoAnne's office.

JoAnne: Hey, cutie. I figured you would be by some time today. (looks at watch) I had you pegged for 2:30, and it's 2:45. I'm off; I must be slipping.

Dan: Yeah, we had a run down and oh, Natalie's father died last night.

JoAnne: Oh, I'm sorry.

Dan: Yeah. Jeremy's pretty tore up about it upstairs.

JoAnne: I would think he would be sad.

Dan: Uh-huh. You know he and Natalie called off the wedding?

JoAnne: Jeremy told me yesterday.

Dan: He did? So, you've spoken with him.

JoAnne: Yes.

Dan: Talked and worked things out? Made some basic understandings? Shared what is going on in each other's life?

JoAnne: We did some sharing.

Dan: Hey, have you met "Sports Night's" newest consultant, Sam Donovan?

JoAnne: I did spend some time with him yesterday.

Dan: Oh, really? What do you think of him?

JoAnne: I don't know him that well to give an honest opinion of him. He's nice.

Dan: Okay... hey, you formed an opinion of me right away.

JoAnne smiles at Dan.

JoAnne: You're easy to read.

Dan: H-e-y.

JoAnne: And Sam is more complex.

Dan: That still doesn't help.

JoAnne: It wasn't meant to help.

Dan shakes it off.

Dan: Anyway, rumor is the last two nights, Sam has been seeing someone. He's been dating somebody.

JoAnne: Good for him.

Dan: We're pretty surprised by it. We can't picture Sam with a woman- especially a younger woman.

JoAnne: I guess you don't know him that well.

Dan: I guess not.

JoAnne laughs.

JoAnne: You know, I thought you were going to come in and ask about me.

Dan: What about you?

JoAnne: I don't know... rumors just fly around this building so much, you never can tell what is going on here.

Dan: Yeah.

JoAnne: And it's not polite for a gentleman to come in and ignore a woman's hair, which was styled yesterday.

Dan looks at JoAnne's hair.

Dan: Oh... you got your hair done. It looks great.

JoAnne: Thank you.

Dan: Hey, how about dinner tonight?

JoAnne: Sure.

Dan: Great. I'll drop by around the usual time.

JoAnne: I'll be ready.

Dan: I'll see you later.

JoAnne: Bye.

Dan leaves the office.

JoAnne picks up the phone and starts dialing.

JoAnne: (on phone) Hey, Allen. It's Jo. I need you to do me a favor. (listens) I need you to do some work on Camera 3 up in Studio A. (listens) Yeah, it's broken again. We need to get it fixed and running. (listens) Thank you. (hangs up the phone)

A delivery man holding flowers knocks on JoAnne's door.

JoAnne: Yeah?

Delivery person: I've got some flowers for Jo Galloway.

JoAnne gets up from her desk and invites the delivery man in.

JoAnne: That's me.

Delivery person: Here you are.

JoAnne takes the flowers, smiles at the delivery man, and smells the freshly picked spring flowers.

JoAnne: Thank you.

JoAnne picks out the card and reads it. She laughs aloud.

Dan comes back into JoAnne's office.

Dan: I just remembered... what's this?

Delivery person: Have a good day, miss.

JoAnne: (to delivery person) Thank you, and you do the same. (to Dan) These are flowers, silly.

Dan: I know, but from whom?

JoAnne: They're from my secret admirer.

Dan: Who?

JoAnne smiles at Dan.

Jeremy is hanging up the phone while standing at his desk. Dana is right next to him.

Jeremy: They're not answering the phone.

Dana: It's all right, Jeremy. We'll call later.

Jeremy: I didn't leave a message and I bet they know I'm trying to call Natalie.

Dana: Why didn't you leave a message?

Jeremy: I don't know... The words, "Hey, I'm sorry for your loss. By the way, Natalie could you please call me?" doesn't sound proper coming from an answering machine.

Dana: You're right. They're probably out.

Jeremy: Or scanning their messages.

Dana: Jeremy.

Jeremy: But they would pick up for you. You see, Natalie would talk to you. Right now, she doesn't want to have anything to do with me, not even in this time of mourning. But Dana, Natalie would call you back because you're Dana and you're her friend.

Dana: Jeremy, listen to yourself.

Jeremy thinks about it for a moment.

Jeremy: Oh god, how could I be so insensitive. (sits in his chair) They're not scanning their messages. They're mourning! They just lost the patriarch of the family and here I am accusing them of doing something so childish. I'm an idiot!

Jeremy slams his head on the table.

Dana: There, there. Jeremy, you don't need a concussion to go with that black eye. Jeremy?

Natalie is carrying a bag over her shoulder and walking through an airport. She spots some people she knows.

Natalie: Nathan! Nicole! (waves her arms in the air) Over here!

The two somber people, about 5-10 years older than Natalie, run up and greet her. Nathan and Nicole each give Natalie a big hug.

Nicole: Oh god, Natalie. You're here.

Nathan: Little Nat.

The three hug again.

Natalie: How's mom holding up?

Nathan: Not well. Nobody's doing well. How about you?

Natalie: I'm still in shock. Let's get going. It's a three-hour trip home.

Nicole: Yeah.

Natalie: Thanks for picking me up, you guys.

The three walk through the airport and toward the parking lot.
